AMERICA'S GOT TALENT-Live taping at Radio City Music Hall- 8/13/14

After viewing a live taping of AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, I reflect on the days of my youth when my mom took me to see movies at Radio City Music Hall in mid-town Manhattan.

A smartly-dressed door person (wearing a pill box hat) ripped our tickets with white gloves, and a pleasant smile. The smell of freshly-popped corn waifed through the massive interior, huge paintings covering its gigantic walls from the lobby to the Grand Foyer.

We open the doors to the seating area and a friendly usher helps us find our seats.  To the left of the stage on the first mezzanine level, a musician plays a popular American standards on a massive organ with foot pedals.

Vibraphone chimes ring throughout the smoking room/bathroom/Ladies' power room area down stairs, alerting everyone that the show will begin soon.

The lights dim. A huge screen is lowered from above the stage and the film begins.

"TRUE GRIT" starring John Wayne, Kim Hunter and Glen Campbell.

After the film, the screen is raised, a 15 minute intermission follows, accompanied by more organ music, and then THE ROCKETTES do a half-hour show.

45 YEARS LATER
I visit Radio City Music Hall after 45 years to see #AGT.

THE MASSIVE LOBBY

There's amazing art everywhere. They really don't make 'em like this anymore.

That's me with Semi-Finalist WENDY LIEBMANN.

My friend Shannon and I had to get a photo with some of the amazing acrobatic dance troupe ACROARMY.

Here's some of the members of CORNELL BHANGRA- a dance group that combines contemporary and traditional dance.

Unfortunately, they didn't make it past the quarter finals.

Here's the video in case you missed it:

"Calvin & Hobbs" cartoonist BILL WATTERSON comes out of retirement and nails it!

The mad scientist behind Calvin and Hobbes returns to the comic scene after secretly working with Pearls Before Swine creator Stephan Pastis, for a series of brand new newspaper comics.

Bill Watterson has been retired for the better part of 20 years and this surprising resurgence is sure to delight hard-core fans everywhere. In the comic he is a smart-ass second grader called "Libby" (kinda like "Bill", backwards) and engages in some side-splitting banter. Share & Enjoy.

According to The Washington Post, the idea of collaborating with Pastis has been brewing for some time.

"Several years ago," Watterson told the Post, "when Stephan did one of his strips that mocked his own drawing ability and mentioned my strip in comparison, I thought it might be funny for me to ghost ‘Pearls’ sometime, just to flip it all on its head."

However, when the opportunity to raise funds for Team Cul de Sac, a charity co-founded by fellow cartoonist Richard Thompson to fight Parkinson's Disease, arose, Watterson reached out to Pastis to do a team-up.

For Pastis' part, Watterson reaching out to him "is like getting a call from Bigfoot."

Earlier this year, the author contributed the poster for Stripped, a documentary about cartoonists struggling with the death of newspapers.

Hopefully, this isn't his last foray back into comics either.

India hopes to curb public deification problem with new animated music video. (NSFW)

In India, public defication is a serious problem. This public service announcement attempts to combat the issue with a silly song and surreal, animated music video.
It might not be for everyone, but to its credit, the musical PSA, entitled "Poo Party," manages to make an unsavory topic both memorable and entertaining. And that's to say nothing of how catchy its refrain is: "Take the poo to the loo."
WATCH (Contains Adult Language and CGI Poo):

According to UNICEF, the international relief organization behind the "Poo2Loo" campaign", an estimated 620 million Indians poop out in the open every day, dumping more than 143 million pounds of solid human waste and putting the public at risk for "life-threatening infections, diseases and epidemics."
